Do You Need to Empty Kitchen Cupboards Before a Respray?

If you are booking a kitchen respray, the cupboard question has a short answer. No, you do not need to empty every cupboard. Clear the worktops, clear or empty cupboards where we need access, and leave enough room for us to work. That is the whole of your side of the preparation.

You do not need to strip the kitchen bare before we arrive. On a Premium respray, we remove the doors and drawer fronts ourselves. On a Standard respray, the kitchen is masked and sprayed in place.

What comes off and what stays

On a Premium respray the doors and drawer fronts come off their hinges and go away to be refinished. They go to the workshop because that is where they can be worked on properly instead of being rushed in the house. The carcasses and framework stay in place, and the fixed sections are sprayed at the property: end panels, cornices, leading edges and the permanent framework. Before any of that spraying happens, the whole kitchen is masked.

That is what the clearing is actually for. Masking needs clear surfaces, and getting the fronts off safely needs space. A cupboard only needs emptying when it is part of that access, and if it is, we tell you which ones when the job is booked in, so you are not guessing.

How the Premium job runs

We usually attend the property on a Monday and take the fronts back to our unit in Denton, Manchester. Each door and drawer front is cleaned, degreased and sanded, repaired and filled where needed with the right filler for the fault, one-part filler, two-part wood filler or wax depending on the damage, then primed, sanded and primed again, and finished with several top coats in your chosen colour and sheen. The fronts normally go back on the Thursday, Friday or Saturday of the same week, depending on workload, and they are rehung, realigned and finished properly.

The coating is a solvent-based, lacquer-based wood finishing system with an acid catalyst that acts as a hardener. It is professional wood-finishing coating, not normal brush or roller paint. Which service fits

A Standard respray is still a quality sprayed finish, but it does not get the same workshop process. On Standard, the kitchen is masked and sprayed in place. It suits sellers, landlords and houses that need to look clean and presentable quickly. Premium is for homeowners staying long term who want the closest thing to a new kitchen without replacing it. Send photos before you empty anything

Many kitchen doors are in better condition than homeowners initially expect. Peeling vinyl, chips, dents, scrapes and damaged edges can often be assessed for repair, but the right answer depends on the substrate and the extent of the damage.

So before you clear a single shelf, send photos: the doors, the drawer fronts, any peeling vinyl and any damaged edges. Include the worst doors, not just the presentable ones, because the condition is what decides the route and the access we will need.

There are kitchens we tell people not to respray. If the layout is wrong, the carcasses are failing or the structure genuinely needs changing, paint will not fix that and full replacement is the better route. Get a straight answer on your kitchen

Once the work is done, follow the aftercare guidance supplied for the finished kitchen. Avoid strong detergents and harsh chemical cleaning products. Everyday marks can normally be lifted with a soft damp cloth.
